Barbara Jean Evans was born on August 22, 1939, in St Clairsville, Ohio. She was the second of five children born to Campsie and John Washington. She attended St. Clairsville High School and moved to New York, NY after graduation. She moved to Cleveland in 1959 and lived at the Phillis Wheatley Hotel for Women where she worked as an elevator operator part-time. It was there that she met Elmer Evans who worked on the 1st floor. They married in 1962. Elmer preceded her in death in 1970.
Having advanced studies in Early Childhood Education, Barbara taught at Kay's Nursery School for many years. She retired from the Internal Revenue Service in 2000 after twenty three years of service.
She leaves two daughters, Terri Evans Bailey (Kevin) and Karyn Evans Farkas (Dan) of New Jersey, three sisters, Geraldine Barrow, Joyce Glenn of Cleveland and Shirley Young of Cincinnati, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Washington. She also leaves four grandchildren, Kendi and Kevin Bailey, and Talia and Kasey Evans Farkas. She is survived by to sister-in-laws, Gaither Rodgers and Marilyn Robinson of Cleveland, one aunt, Joan Henry of St Clairsville, Ohio, and host of cousins, nieces, and nephews
