Shirley Ann Calhoun Dixon was born April 3, 1937 the fifth child born to Reverend George and Catherine Calhoun in Hebbardsville, Kentucky. Her parents and siblings Clarence, Mary, Donald and Maurice preceded her in death.
Shirley grew up happy and energetic on a farm with her family. As a young girl, Shirley enjoyed picking blackberries and took pleasure in the ease of farm life. Shirly attended Hebbardsville Public Schools and graduated from Douglass High School in 1955. After graduation she worked a variety of domestic jobs until she decided to travel north to Cleveland, Ohio to stay with her Aunt Alice where she was surrounded by additional family. Shirley became a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where she served on the usher board for several years.
Shirley met Melvin Dixon and after a long courtship they married in October 1968, Cleveland, Ohio. Shirley and Melvin were married for 43 years until his passing in 2012.
Shirley loved decorating their home with tiny treasures she often found in quaint antique stores. She had a natural knack to transform and turn a simple space to a warm and inviting space. Shirley took pride in making her house a home. Shirley was hired at Wendy's and was a great asset to the company serving as their Customer Supervisor. She was often seen with a smile conversing with the clientele. Shirley worked at Wendy's for 19 years.
While employed with Wendy's she worked concurrently at Lomond School as the Student Lunch and Recess Supervisor in the Shaker Heights School District. The students held a special place in her heart. Passed students never forgot the positive impact she made on their lives. Shirley loved her kids! Shirley retired from education after 22 years of service.
After retirement, Shirley continued her interest in planting flowers, grooming bushes and overall working in her yard while connecting with her neighbors. She found joy spending time with her sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins. (Aunt) Shirley was an "Angel" in their eyes.
Shirley departed this world peacefully Friday, July 16, 2021 at Hospice of Western Reserve. She leaves to cherish her passing her beloved sisters and brothers and step children: Gladys Pauline Green, Annabelle Woodson, Carolyn Cooper (Conrad), Robert "Bobby" Calhoun and Douglass L. Calhoun (Ollie Sue), Deborah Barnett, Melvin Dixon Jr. and Casper Pollard and a host of loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
